“It’s Always About Light”

Seeing Through a Broader Lens

One of the great gifts of science is the way it widens our view of the world. It offers a perspective that invites hope. When we begin to see life as layered and interconnected, we become less prone to despair—and more open to possibility.

This is especially needed in our time, as we witness an unsettling increase in violence throughout the Caribbean, including right here in Barbados. It has shocked many because it seems so at odds with who we are as a people.

Yet even in this moment, I find myself drawn back to a simple but profound truth:
It’s always about light.

There Is Only One Light

Science tells us that all visible colour comes from a single source: white light. The colours we perceive—blue, green, red—are not separate lights, but simply reflections. Every surface absorbs some wavelengths and reflects others. The colour we see is what is allowed to bounce back.

The same is true for people.

Each of us receives the same essential life energy, the same divine spark. But in some lives, especially those shaped by trauma or neglect, that goodness is absorbed and not reflected. What we see instead are expressions of pain—anger, violence, and fear.

But this doesn’t mean that love is absent. It means it hasn’t been mirrored often enough.

The Importance of Reflection

We become what we see reflected back to us. Those who have known only harshness will mirror it. Those who have encountered love and compassion will often radiate it.

Yet even those who appear hardened still have access to love. We see it in how they care for a child or bond with a partner. The capacity is there—just hidden beneath layers of unreflected light.

This isn’t just about “others.” It touches all of us. Life gives us knocks, and we learn to protect ourselves. But those of us who carry peace, who have known gentleness, must offer it freely—as reflection, not possession.

What the World Needs Now

We don’t need more control. We don’t need more fear.
We need more love.
Love that is seen. Love that is felt. Love that is reflected.

So if you are one who has received love, peace, wisdom—reflect it. Don’t hold back. Don’t be selective.

Let your life radiate the fullness of that light.

Spiritual Practice: Becoming a Reflector

Here are three simple ways to live this reflection:

  • Be Conscious: Make kindness and compassion your default response, even when it’s hard.
  • Hold Space: Create environments where others feel safe to reveal their better selves.
  • Heal Your Filters: Use prayer, reflection, or inner work to clear what blocks your light from shining.

Let’s surround the next generation with beauty, truth, and generosity. Let’s raise children who grow up reflecting light, because they were raised in its presence.

Just like trees don’t hide their green, let us not hide our love.
Reflect it. Freely. Boldly. Beautifully.
