Stillness

Stillness Hesychia — and the presence of the space Read this sentence aloud, slowly, and listen not to the words but to what lies between them. Before each word, a small silence. After it, another. The silence makes no sound, and yet without it there would be no word at all — only a single […]

Do You Want to Be Well?

Yeshua asks the man at the pool a single question — Do you want to be well? — and the man does not answer it. He explains, instead, why he cannot: someone always steps down ahead of him. We know that move. We look at what others are doing to us, and we quietly hand them our healing. But the gift was never far off. It was standing in front of him the whole while, already given, waiting only to be received. Not a great thing to be achieved. A small thing to be allowed.

They That Wait

On a bus, as a boy, a passage I had never learned rose up in me, whole: they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. It has walked with me ever since — and slowly it has taught me that waiting is not lying down. It is the hardest, most active thing there is. And the door we spend our lives waiting on may not open the way we imagine. It opens inward.

Going Out and Coming In – On presence, rhythm, and the stillness we have forgotten

We have become so caught up in doing that we no longer return to being. Yet everything in life pulses — it goes out, and it comes in — and the coming in is not idleness but the way we are nourished. A reflection on presence, the rhythm we have lost, and the healing that is already within reach.

EMANCIPATION DAY · A REFLECTION

We keep a freedom that is still on the way. A reflection for Emancipation Day on the being and the becoming — on Sankofa and the gathering of the fragments, and on emancipation as a continuous work handed to us, and to be handed on.

Magnificent Humanity – AI, Slavery, and the Recovery of the Human Person

A HIER Life roundtable engaging Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical on artificial intelligence and the human person. Theologians, historians, and clergy — with a voice from the machine itself — ask what it means to be human in an age that would reduce the person to data, and what slavery still has to teach us. An edited summary, with the full recording.

What’s the difference between being fixed and being healed? More than you’d think.

Many of us want to be fixed. Very few want to be healed. A reflection on the difference — and why healing, not just the fix, is the deeper invitation.

Power, Purpose and the Seed Within

We have handed ourselves over — our bodies, our innocence, our learning, even our belonging to God — as though we were not already that. The work now is not to acquire, but to return. What we need to sow in our hearts is nothing: the seed is already there, and it is who we are. The power we are called back to is not power over, but power in — power in awakening to the fact that this journey is mine, and that it has a purpose. Not one handed to me, nor one my little self invents from the options down here, but one drawn from my very essence. And not one I come to by myself, but held.

Reflections in the Forest

Walking in the forest reminds us that the Earth is not simply the background to human life. It is a living field of relationship — holding us, grounding us, and teaching us to listen again. In returning to nature, we may begin to recover something essential within ourselves.

Come up higher: Stillness, Turmoil and the Work of Humanity.

On a quiet holiday morning, stillness can feel like a gift. There is peace in the air. A sense of rest. A pause. And yet, even in that stillness, the heart remembers that in other parts of the world there is turmoil, fear, destruction, and loss of life. It is tempting to call ourselves blessed […]
